Your first meeting with a potential investor is in progress. Looking good so far? Oh good. That’s nice. No ambushes yet? What, none at all? Oh really? Look closely, just behind those ‘rocks’ and ‘bushes’. And so … there it is, as yet unseen. And it seemed such a good day too!

“How long is the money going to last?”

Inevitably entrepreneurs feel they have an unbeatable idea. Thus they believe they are offering an irresistible opportunity to a potential investor. There’s nothing wrong with confidence. Nothing at all – unless that confidence crosses the border into reckless optimism.

Oh wow. Nice looking man across the table. Not seen him before. Such lovely eyes, and looking at me too. But … what about the alarm bells? What can your friends at Meeting World mean? Okay we’ll tell you. It won’t take long. So … ready for this? Good. Here we go.

Don’t be taken in by excessive direct eye contact with you from your counterpart. It really isn’t a foolproof indication of awareness, agreement or anything positive. It might be, but don’t rely on it. Your counterpart may have been mentored in how to apply this technique.

So here’s you, sitting in on a marketing meeting. The coffee’s hot, there are some chocolate biscuits left on the plate and you’re feel pretty good all round. Possibly with just that little touch of complacency perhaps? Oh surely not? Not you. Well … of course not. So why not read this on behalf of some of your more unenlightened colleagues? And then – joy of joys, you can mentor them. Hmm, nice!

Watch out for sloppy thinking from your colleagues! Goodness, what can Meeting World mean? After all, – everything’s going soooooo smoothly. And on the surface, perhaps it is. However they might be leading or indeed being led into a minefield. Possibly one’s that hidden under a quicksand.

There should be no conflict between strategy and tactics, but often there is. The need to achieve growth in quarterly earnings can be at odds with the desire to invest in a market, skills or a technology. Hence the meeting.

Chairing a project meeting? Things not going quite to plan? So okay – it happens. As the old saying goes: don’t sweat the small stuff, that’s the job of the various project personnel hired to bring the project to completion.

Putting undue attention on relatively insignificant aspects of the project can also quickly bring the project off schedule. Experienced project managers know where they can ‘let go’ versus knowing which things demand their attention.

So here you are the project planning meeting. Hmm. Nice. Please try to bear in mind this time (as indeed you might have done previously) that one of the guiding rules in the management of a project is the Pareto Principle which states that roughly 80% of the outputs will be generated by only 20% of the inputs. In other words, a few elements create the most impact.

Tip of the day

New employer, first meeting and mainly with people you’ve never met before. So get clued up beforehand. Avoid surprises.

The fact that it’s so easy to find background information on almost anyone today makes it all the more astounding that so many people don’t. And the others in that meeting might have been doing the same about you!

Tip of the day

First date is it? Bit keen are you? Okay – fine BUT …. don’t try to surprise your date until you know his or her tastes. Not everyone enjoys balloon rides, slasher movies, or art classes.

Tip of the day

Worthwhile meeting was it? You sure? Really? Okay, fine. But how about just a little bit of stark reality – just to ‘ground’ you a bit? Ready for this?

We suggest that you remind yourself that creative thinking and action have led to astonishing successes (even after numerous failed attempts) and there are of course situations and examples of where conservatism and conventional thinking have led to obsolescence or catastrophe!
